Marblehead North Island Championships
Sunday 16th February
The running of the North Island Championships ( 2013 ) in Hamilton saw a
field of 9 Skippers and yachts line up to contest the event.
The weather was brilliant for the event but the ensuing high over the country
and predictions of breezes coming from a North Easterly quarter was going to
make for light and shifting breeze patterns across the course.
Racing started with an Olympic Style course for the first 2 races to try and
keep the fleet further out in the lake and make the most of more prominent
breezes on the outer margins of the course but the fleet remained bunched
and struggling in the light conditions so RO Sharon called an early break for
lunch to allow for breeze to build in the afternoon.
The breeze continued to build, so a change to a box course was set with a
gate at the bottom end and then we got away to some good racing. Many
times boats that got out to good leads soon found that being in front wasn’t a
good place to be by falling into holes or suffering large shifts in the breeze and
have trailing boats taking advantage and overtake them and sail away to take
The racing was kept quick fire and a lot of back to back racing to make the
most of the event being a one day event and we achieved 13 races by the
Carl Smith took out the event with a controlled display of sailing, reading the
conditions to great effect and chalking up his maiden regatta win and all with a
brand new Dibley Rm design. Well-done Carl .
I was surprised that when the results were correlated, that I had finished 2nd
with Mr consistent Rob Nelson finishing a close 3rd.
First time RO Sharon did a great job in running her first sanctioned event in
what was trying conditions for any RO trying to set a course and keeping a
spirited bunch of skippers under control.
Many thanks to the helpers Peter Pollard, Gordon West and John Wall who
gave up their valuable time to assist with running the event.
Also thanks to the various Skippers, some who travel large distances to
Continue supporting these events.
We have the Marblehead North Island Champs this coming weekend Sunday 16th.
We are still after a few volunteers to help with observing, scoring, rescue boat duties.
If you could help in any way can you email me.
Look forward to some replies.
